特點
①實用性強。專為美國國會圖書館排架使用而編制，從類目安排到號碼配置，都處處考慮該館藏書的實際需要。
②類目詳盡，多達20多萬個，成為世界上類目最多、篇幅最大的分類法。
③不僅可適用於綜合性圖書館，而且也適用於相應的專業圖書館。
④及時反映新學科和新主題。美國國會圖書館設有專門部門管理LC，根據館藏變化及時修訂類表，並按季編印發行《LC的補充和修改》，及時報導LC類號的修訂信息。
⑤各大類分別獨立編制，出版時間和版本不統一，沒有統一的編制體例以及通用復分表和總索引。
⑥基本採用順序標記制，類號簡短，但類號不能表達類目間的等級關係，助記性較差。
⑦套用 LC號碼被載入美國國會圖書館發行的印刷卡片和機讀目錄，以及美、英等國出版圖書在版編目數據中。除了美國國會圖書館以外，LC還被美國許多高等學校圖書館、專門圖書館以及一些美國以外國家的圖書館所採用。

《美國國會圖書館分類法》Library of Congress Classification
LC各分冊均有索引，各大類類表可作獨立的專業分類表使用。LC共分20大類：A 綜合性著作；B 哲學、宗教；C歷史：輔助科學；D歷史：世界史 ；E-F歷史：美洲史；G地理、人類學；H社會科學；J政治學；K法律；L教育；M音樂；N美術；P語言、文學；Q科學；R醫學；S農業、畜牧業；T技術；U軍事科學；V海軍科學；Z書目及圖書館學。分類號由字母與數字組成，數字部分按整數順序制編號。此分類法實用性強、類目詳盡，不但適用於綜合性圖書館，也適用於專業圖書館。LC的分類號現已載入英美等國的在版編目數據、美國國會圖書館發行的印刷卡片以及若干國家的機讀目錄之中。
簡表
美國國會圖書館編制的一部大型綜合性標題表。英文簡稱LCSH。1909～1914 年 ， 美國國會圖書館以本館藏書目錄為基礎，編制和出版了2 卷本的 《美國國會圖書館字典式目錄用標題表》，1975年第八版改為本名，至1991年已出14版。目前，LCSH在出印刷本的同時，還發行縮微膠捲、縮微平片、計算機磁帶版和光碟版。自1989年第十二版起，將每版新增刪的標題單獨抽印，排在前言與主表之間，以便查閱。LCSH的前言介紹各版的標題分類統計數字、發展簡史、標題結構以及示範標題表等；主表由眾多的規範化的標題及各類參照按字順排列，許多標題後附有《美國國會圖書館分類法》的分類號；附錄是一個專門用於兒童讀物的標題表。LCSH是目前世界上規模最大、套用最廣泛的標題表，在檢索語言的發展史上和當今圖書館主題編目工作中，占有重要地位。美國國會圖書館自1984年起出版《主題編目手冊 （標題部分）》，1991年已出至第四版，它是使用 LCSH 的最主要的輔助工具，其中除介紹主題編目工作的基本規定外，還以較大篇幅介紹了各種復分標題及其使用方法。
