大衛·卡坦，義大利的里雅斯特大學（University of Trieste）翻譯學副教授，在該大學的現代語言翻譯高級學院開設跨文化交流和翻譯的課想地程。著述甚廣，涉及翻譯、語言、文化等領域，與人合編《柯林斯意英雙語詞典》，並翻譯了大量保險、醫藥方面的文獻以及兒童詩歌集。
內容簡介
“跨文化翻譯”（translating across cultures）和“文化精通性”（cultural proficiency）是當今翻譯研究的熱門話題。本書試圖使關於文化的討論進入一個更嚴密、更具有連貫性的邏輯軌道，並提供一個請棄盛艱為筆譯、口譯者及其他文化中介者傳授文化的模式。作為時下解讀文化的一個入門，本書旨在提高文化中介者在構建、理解及翻譯文化現實過程中的文化自覺性。作者認為，文化語境是一個框架，我們在其中感知並理解外在的文化意象或現實。作者的研究方法是跨學科的，借鑑了人類學、元模式理論、社會語言學、言語行為理論、關聯理論、功能語法理論等。
