1994年獲西北農業大學(現西北農林科技大學)農學系遺傳育種專業學士學位,
1997年獲西北農業大學基礎科學系生物化學專業碩士學位,
2005年在中科院微生物所獲微生物學博士學位,
2005-2008年為美國普度大學生物科學系博士後,
2008-2010年任中科院武漢病毒所病毒學國家重點實驗室副研究員,
2010年作為引進人才擔任西北農林科技大學生命科學學院教授、博導,

近5年以通訊作者在Nature Communications、PNAS、PLoS Pathogens、mBio、Envrionmental Microbiology等國際著名期刊發表SCI論文40餘篇,其中兩篇入選Faculty of 1000,並被NewsRx, Advances in Yersinia Research and Treatment, Front. Cell. Infect. Microbiol., Curr Opin Microbiol.等多次推薦點評。獲授權專利3件。曾作為主要研究人員參加國家重大專項,973,863, 國家自然科學基金等項目的研究。多次應邀在國際、國內學術會議做大會報告及分會場主旨報告。
沈錫輝教授在細菌六型分泌系統的功能研究及效應蛋白鑑定、細菌生物膜形成及運動性調控、植物內共生微生物組及其對農作物的促生抗旱功能研究、芳香化合物降解機制等方面取得了比較突出的成績, 包括 1、首次發現細菌六型分泌系統的離子轉運功能,率先報導了一類離子結合型T6SS效應蛋白在離子轉運和細菌抗環境脅迫及宿主營養免疫中發揮重要作用;2、以谷氨酸棒桿菌為模型系統揭示了分枝硫醇在細菌抗多重環境脅迫中的多樣化作用機制;3、發現細菌鞭毛三型分泌系統伴侶蛋白FliS通過與FlgM相互作用而抑制其分泌,進而影響細菌鞭毛系統基因表達調控,從而揭示了鞭毛系統基因表達的關閉機制。
