時間回朔到1989年，Will.I. Am(William Adams)和Apl.de.ap(Allen Pineda)在洛杉磯相遇且開始RAP及演出。在得到Jerry Heller（Eazy-E的老闆）的外甥賞識之後，這對組合與Ruthless唱片簽約（該公司由Eazy-E管理）。同時簽約的還有他們的一個朋友——Dante Santiago。他們將這三人的組合稱作Atban Klann。他們的首張專輯從未出版，因為公司認為該張專輯的正面主題不會受到市場及大眾的歡迎。在Eazy-E於1995年因愛滋病死去之後，Dante Santiago退出Atban Klann，另兩人重組成黑眼豆豆。Will.I. Am曾在專輯《Monkey Business》的封面上解釋取這個名字的原因：“黑眼豆豆是靈魂的食物”。這個組合新加進了成員Taboo（Jaime Gomez），並邀請Kim Hill作樂隊的固定背景和聲。
Will.I. Am在經歷樂團晉升的歷史之後，決定將全部精力放在音樂上，於是幫人製作了許多大熱歌曲，例如和Justin Timberlake，Pussycat Dolls等人的合作，以及Fergie的個人大碟，他都是盡心盡力做好。於是，他在2001和2003年發行兩張很好但並未為人所知的個人專輯後，又有了發行一張個人專輯的念頭，這樣我們就迎來了《Songs About Girls》。
