本書採用現代科學語言，詮釋了針刺療法對於神經系統疾患的作用及其神經生物學機理。內容包括針刺療法的簡要歷史、針刺效應的一般機理、穴位功能及現代研究、針刺鎮痛及針藥複合麻醉、慢性疼痛、中風、心臟病、高血壓、癲癇、免疫抑制、不孕症、圍絕經期綜合徵、抑鬱症、戒菸和戒毒等。所有章節均邀請有經驗的學者撰寫，作者分別來自復旦大學上海醫學院中西醫結合系（針刺原理研究所）及醫學神經生物學國家重點實驗室、上海市針灸經絡研究中心、美國耶魯大學醫學院和哈佛人學醫學院。其中復旦大學上海醫學院中西醫結合系（針刺原理研究所）開展針刺研究已有50多年的歷史，1983年被任命為世界衛生組織傳統醫學合作中心。
本書基於多學科技術的現代研究，為針刺研究和神經科學工作者呈現了針刺療法的概貌和展望，為臨床工作者在針刺療法的套用及機理方面提供了較為翔實的參考資料。對醫學生而言，這是一本中西醫結合的專業指導書。
