儘管《語言課程設計:教師指南》各章大多是按傳統課程程式來排列的,但作者Kathleen Graves(美)還是在第一章內指出《語言課程設計:教師指南》是按系統來安排活動的。作者認為一個課程的各個部分都是相互關聯、不可分割的整體,把這個整體稱之為課程設計的“構架”。然而,“作為課程設計者,你可以從這構架中的任何地方開始你的課程,只要你認為從這裡開始對你的課程是合理的即可”。因此,作者認為傳統的課程設計被看成是一個十分有序的、線性的程式,而不像她自己在設計課程的過程中所經歷的和大多數教師在現實工作中所經歷到的那樣“雜亂無章”。
所以這本書不一定按章節前後順序來學習。作者在這本書中表達了自己對課程設計的想法,有些地方敘述較為詳細,並引用了其他教師的評論和材料,意在啟發教師評定這些觀點,進而引發教師自己的意見。
