創作背景

2015年3月，威肯在SXSW音樂節上首次現場演唱了該曲的Demo，當時歌曲正處於製作階段，名字還是《Mood Music》。威肯的朋友La Mar Taylor用手機錄製了威肯現場演唱的片段，並上傳到了網上，收穫了一定的關注。因為是手機錄製的，所以上傳的片段非常的嘈雜，裡面有許多尖叫聲。威肯很喜歡尖叫聲的效果，所以在後期的錄製中加入虛擬的尖叫聲。這首歌最終錄製了67歌版本。《The Hills》的名稱和橋段部分的歌詞借鑑了1977年由韋斯·克雷文執導的恐怖電影《隔山有眼》（The Hills Have Eyes）。

《The Hills》的MV由Grant Singer執導，於2015年5月27日首播。MV開始為一處車禍現場，威肯從倒掛著的車門中緩緩出現。清醒之後的他沿著昏暗的街道行走，而他的兩位女乘客則在一旁哭泣著，試圖得到他的反應。然而他卻對這發生的一切都產生麻木。隨後流血受傷的他進入到了一處荒涼的廢棄豪宅。他走上了螺旋樓梯，最終到達一處被紅光所照射的房間。房間內，兩位女性在一張床上。而一位年老者則坐在威肯的跟前，失望地觀望著他。
