圖書簡介
Forover a hundred years, many botanists, horticulturists and flower-lovers have sought the prized rhododendrons of China, and numerous articles and monographs about rhododendrons have been published. However, most of the articles and monographs are based on the study of herbarium specimens or cultivated plants in gardens.Only a few people have actually located the rhododendrons of China in their habitat and made a thorough investigation and study of them in the wild.Even the acknowledged experts on rhododendrons or the scholars who consider themselves rhododendron specialists may not have been to the areas in China where rhododendrons are found in the wild to appreciate the grace of the“king of flowers.”It has been all the more difficult for the vast numbers of ordinary rhododendron-lovers to have an opportunity to appreciate the charm of rhododendrons in their native habitat.
Early in this century,R.Fortune,E.H.Wilson,G.Forrest,Kingdon-Ward,J.F.Rock and others collected a great number of rhododendron specimens, seeds and seedlings in China, and the seeds and seedlings they collected were then successfully cultivated in gardens in the West. They made a great contribution to familiarizing the West with the rhododendrons of China, which could be enjoyed by people in the West only when grown in their gardens.Very few had the opportunity to appreciate the gracefulness of the rhododendrons of China in their native habitat.
Rhododendrons of China brings you the natural beauty of Chinese rhododendrons and an opportunity to climb the high mountains and cross the deep valleys to explore the secrets of the enchanting rhododendrons through the cameras of the authors. This book is not only an invaluable reference work for studying the rhododendrons of China, but also a beautiful album. For anyone who is interested in the rhododendrons of China, this is indeed a valuable collection.
