本書為《馬丁文集》第2卷，收錄馬丁自20世紀80年代至今發表的14篇關於語篇語義研究的論文。馬丁在韓禮德思想的基礎上，重點發展了語篇語義層的語言學理論，認為構成該層面的是評價系統、協商系統和參與系統。如果說韓禮德研究的重點是辭彙語法層，那么馬丁開拓的則是語篇語義層。本書內容主要有：言語行為、英語語篇中的連續和判斷、英語語言的評價系統、銜接與語篇性、跨越小句的意義、評價的組篇功能、作為態度發生器的級差系統等。
