本書中所有閱讀文章都圍繞四個基本概念展開：第一，因為共同的需求使群體的產生；第二，因為某些利益的分享使得群體得以延續；第三，因為更多利益的分享使得群體壯大；第四，因為當群體壯大到不能使利益均享的規模時，它便分解成各種小群體。書中的閱讀文章均採用圍繞反映這些概念的大量不同學科的材料編寫，涉及歷史、藝術、生物學、經濟學、生態學、社會科學家、政治學、地球科學、工程學、人類學以及地理學等學科。這樣編寫的目的是保證學習者對不同學科的興趣都能得到滿足。同時書中還收錄了若干民間文學故事或傳說。每篇閱讀文章中的較難辭彙及其解釋以及部分專有名詞按文章順序列在本書第6-12頁。每篇閱讀文章後都配有精心設計的閱讀理解練習，供讀者檢查閱讀效果用。
