這首歌的旋律以一首愛爾蘭的反戰歌曲——《Jonny I Hardly Knew Ye》——為主。同樣使用這個旋律的歌有兒童歌曲《螞蟻一個接一個的前進》〔"The Ants Go Marching One By One"〕以及《動物們成雙成對的進去》〔"The Animals Went in Two by Two"〕。後者的歌詞是由愛爾蘭裔美國人派崔克·吉爾摩〔Patrick Gilmore〕所寫的，他的歌詞完全與原本的反戰歌詞相反。在原本的反戰歌曲中，約翰尼回家時眼睛是瞎的、雙腳是瘸的，而且他是回到一個他當初為了參加戰爭而狠心拋棄的女人身邊。

這首歌的音樂也被The Clash使用在他們的一首歌“英國內戰”(English Civil War)之中。
另外，在卓別林的經典影片《大獨裁者》里，這首歌的音樂也短暫出現
這首歌的旋律在布魯斯·威利斯的電影Die Hard: With a Vengence中的Simon Gruber的一景有出現過，也曾經在庫貝里克的經典黑色喜劇電影奇愛博士當中多次出現，伴隨B-52轟炸機的場景。
這個也是台灣中華職棒統一獅隊的洋將布雷的出場主題曲，每當他一上場打擊觀眾就會開始演奏這首歌。
這首歌的旋律還被英國足球俱樂部利物浦（liverpool football club，LFC)的球迷們用於歌頌他們的頭號射手費爾南多.托雷斯，創造了一首托雷斯之歌，每當托雷斯進球，安菲爾德球場上空就會響起萬人高唱的這激情澎湃的聲音。
