人物生平
托馬斯·卡魯可能出生於1594年或1595年的肯特郡的威克姆西部。他的父親馬太·卡魯是一名律師，他們全家人大概在1598年搬往倫敦居住。在他進入牛津大學莫頓學院之前，他的受教育情況沒人知道。
1612年，他被中殿律師學院錄取。
1613年至1616年卡魯作為秘書在英國駐義大利和荷蘭使館為達德利·卡爾頓工作。卡魯因侮辱卡爾頓和他的妻子而遭到解僱，回到英國後也無法找到工作。
1622年，卡魯的第一個詩作發表了，韻律詩被放置在托馬斯青春喜劇《TheHeir》的扉頁。
在17世紀20年代早期，卡魯結識了本·強森，並融入了他的社交圈子。
1630年，卡魯成為查理一世私人聚會上的常客。他被國王稱作索爾，據說“很受國王的欣賞，國王認為他的才能是無可比擬的”
卡魯曾經因為羞辱過他人而獲得了不好的名聲。不過，這並沒有對他的職業生涯造成什麼破壞，他依舊還是那個優秀的詩人，軍人和大臣。他的社會詩被看做是對他們智慧的讚揚，就像是在表達“崇拜神聖霸權”而“鄙視退縮。事實上，卡魯以生命作詩，雖然，他的作品並不是很多，但是卻有不少經典。
在生命快要接近結束時，他進行了懺悔，想召來傑出的牧師來為他的死來做禱告。然而，由於他行為不檢點而遭到拒絕。1640年3月23這一天，托馬斯·卡魯死了，他被埋葬在威斯敏斯特的聖斯坦的西部。他其餘詩作於同年發表，隨後在1642年發表的第二版經過了修改與擴充。

可憐的貧困的傢伙，你實在過於放肆，
