在實際套用中，展覽會名稱相當繁雜。英語國家中，有exhibition, general exhibition, industrial exhibition, agricultural exhibition, consumer exhibition, international exhibition, regional, exhibition, local exhibition, private exhibition, major exhibition, minor exhibition, solo exhibition, peripatetic exhibition, exposition, show, trade show, moveable show, road show, boat show, plane show, catalogue show, fair, multi-trade fair, trade mart, display等等。
在中文裡，展覽會名稱有博覽會、展覽會、展覽、展銷會、博覽展銷會、看樣定貨會、展覽交流會、交易會、貿易洽談會、展示會、展評會、樣品陳列、廟會、集市、墟、場等等。另外，還有一些展覽會使用非專業名詞。比如：日（澳大利亞全國農業日Australian National Field Days），周（柏林國際綠色周Berlin International Green Week）、市場（亞特蘭大國際地毯市場International Carpet and Rug Market）、中心（漢諾瓦辦公室、信息、電信世界中心World Center for Office-Information-Telecommunication）等，加上這些非專業的名稱，展覽會名稱將更多。
基本含義
展覽會基本詞的含義與中文的不大相同，下面做一些簡單的說明。
FAIR。在英文中fair是傳統形式的展覽會，也就是集市與廟會。Fair的特點是“泛”，有商人也有消費者，有農產品也有工業品。集市和廟會發展到近代，分支出了貿易性質的、專業的展覽，被稱作“exhibition”(展覽會)。而繼承了“泛”特點的，規模龐大的、內容繁雜的綜合性質的展覽仍被稱為fair 。但是在傳入中國時則被譯成了“博覽會”。因此，對待外國的“博覽會”，要認真予以區別：是現代化的大型綜合展覽會，還是傳統的鄉村集市。
EXHIBITION。在英文中exhibition 是在集市和廟會基礎上發展起來的現代展覽形式，也是被最廣泛使用的展覽名稱，通常作為各種形式的展覽會的總稱。 EXPOSITION。Exposition起源於法國，是法文的展覽會。在近代史上，法國政府第一個舉辦了以展示、宣傳國家工業實力的展覽會，由於這種展覽會不做貿易 ，主要是為了宣傳 ，因此，exposition便有了“宣傳性質的展覽會”的含義。由於其他國家也紛紛舉辦宣傳性質的展覽會，，並由於法語對世界一些地區的影響，以及世界兩大展覽會組織：國際博覽會聯盟和國際展覽會局的總部均在法國，因此，不僅在法語國家，而且在北美等英語地區，exposition 被廣泛地使用。

標攤：又名標準展位，是指國際上通稱的3*3標準展位或3*2展位，即9平米與6平米的展示空間。異型展位：是指非標準的展位空間。例如：兩個或兩個以上的標準展位，在不破壞主體結構時，將中間的隔斷打通使幾個標準展位聯在一起。成為一個不規則的展示空間。或者由於場地空間問題產出的非正方形與長方形的展示空間。
光地售價：是指展覽場地周邊或內外未搭建標準展位而進行的土地短期使用權的一種租賃行為。
特裝：在光地面積內通過不同的材料、展體、展品包裝、展位結構包裝而形成的一種具有特色的展示空間。
博覽會：是指在某一領域非同類產品或某一行業的具有相同屬性的物質進行的綜合性展示。
指定：是指會展相關責任與義務的許可權說明。指定即具有排他性。
