在哈佛大學醫學院學習期間,小保方晴子產生了“STAP”細胞的構想。哺乳動物的細胞特化使得細胞個體得以行使各種不同的功能,從一個已分化的細胞類型向另一類型轉變的過程被認為是非常罕見的。但小保方晴子認為,通過令高度分化的體細胞接受外來刺激,可以使細胞回到類似於“幹細胞”的狀態,研究人員將這一細胞稱為“刺激觸發性多能性獲得細胞”,英文名Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency cells,縮寫為STAP細胞。
