張硯秋編著的《大學英語泛讀(5）》為《大學英語》系列教材(第三版)泛讀教程。本次修訂是按照2004年教育部頒布的《大學英語課程教學要求(試行)》並結合當前我國大學英語的實際情況而進行的。因此，我們的修訂方向是：在提高閱讀能力的同時，要注重培養學生綜合套用英語的能力。
《大學英語》泛讀教程第五、六冊在本次修訂時，聽取了使用院校的意見，壓縮了篇幅，由每冊十個單元壓縮到八個單元，每單元仍保留三篇課文。由於各院校課程安排不同，各地學生閱讀能力存在差異，各院校可視具體情況有選擇地使用本教材。我們在編排時，每個單元的第一課內容更精彩，使用時可著重處理。
