這次修訂主要遵循以下四條原則：
1.維持原書基本框架。《大學英語教程》(第4冊)(修訂本)仍為傳統精讀課本，沿用以課文為中心，給織言學習之基本方法。每課內容亦與原書大致相同，仍分課文、練習、語法三大部分，所附小詩仍供學生自學欣賞，無需教師課堂上正式處理；
2.儘量在總體目標上以及語言項目、辭彙範圍與練習方式上使教材體現教委大綱規定之要求。希望基本上完成精讀課作為一種課型之任務；
3.刷新教材內容，使之更生動、更多樣、更實用；
4.努力加強教材之計畫性與科學性，提高教材總體格調，增加信息量，更好地使語言與文化結合在一起。
以上幾條，僅為編者主觀願望。實際情況，限於編者水平，各種錯誤缺點仍難避免。因此我們衷心希望使用《大學英語教程》(第4冊)(修訂本)諸君能不吝賜教，予以指正。此外，各類練習總量偏多，教師必須根據選擇使用，這點亦請使用者特別注意。

內容簡介
《大學英語教程（第4冊 修訂本）》原為北京外國語學院（現改名為北京外國語大學）胡文仲等同志所編College English一、二兩冊之續編，供大專院校英語專業本科二年級學生使用。《大學英語教程（第4冊 修訂本）》自1985年正式出版以來，已重印十餘次，印數達五十餘萬冊。使用時間之長，遠遠超出編者當初預料。對此，編者心中十分不安。因為《大學英語教程》(第4冊)(修訂本)當初編寫相當倉促。考慮不周之處，乃至明顯錯誤均甚多，而一用10年不動字，實在有負於使用《大學英語教程》(第4冊)(修訂本)諸君之厚愛。因些決心予以重大修改，是為新編。
