Stephen Funk Pearson的父母都是音樂家。他在致力于吉他演奏之前曾經嘗試了許多樂器。他在美國的Vassar學習哲學,音樂和作曲。正是因為不尋常的音樂背景,Pearson成長為一位極有個性的作曲家。當著手於這張“中國靈感”專輯時,他非常感興趣並為之提供了《南中國海之靜寂》。這首作品是為吉他獨奏而創作。這首作品在指板上多加了一個弦橋(saddle),使吉他具有兩套同時發出不同聲音和定弦的琴弦。有些音高並不完美,但是它構成了這部作品的部分特色。事實上,因為這樣不尋常的定弦,要視奏這部作品非常棘手。吉他聽起來像日本13弦古箏。
