文學
最初的文學作品包括650年左右盎格魯薩克遜地區Northumbrian語的主禱文，禱文以"Faeder ure, Thu the eart on heofonum"開頭。有些蘇格蘭和Northumbrian人至今仍講“oor faither”、“thoo art”。
最早的蘇格蘭文學作品包括John Barbour的Brus（14世紀），Wyntoun的 Cronykil 以及 Blind Harry 的Wallace (15世紀)。從15世紀開始，大量圍繞著愛丁堡的皇家法院和聖安德魯斯大學的文學作品被創作出來，作者包括Robert Henryson、William Dunbar、Douglas、David Lyndsay等。 The Complaynt of Scotland was an early printed work in Scots.
十七世紀起，anglicisation increased. At the time, many of the oral ballads from the borders and the North East were written down. Writers of the period were Robert Sempill, Robert Sempill the younger, Francis Sempill, Lady Wardlaw and Lady Grizel Baillie.
