外語學習者的任務之一就是把外國文化介紹給中國人的同時再把中國文化傳播到國外。外語學習既是個人逐步掌握外語知識和技能，提高外語實際運用能力的過程，又是拓展視野、豐富生活經歷、促進思維發展、陶冶情操和提高綜合人文素養的過程。大學外語學習從某種程度上影響著學生的價值取向和美學訴求。在日益多元化的教育背景下，學習者需要在母語和外語文化的雙重體驗中獲得語言認知水平的提高，以滿足未來就業市場對具有多元文化背景的複合型人才的需要。本教材構想建立在針對本科生開設的英語選修課“中國文化概況（英語）”的基礎之上。該課程內容涉及中國文化概論的常識內容，教材和授課語言為英語。學生在課堂上一方面可以了解到中國文化知識，另一方面可以掌握與中國文化相應的英文表達，對本族語文化進行深層體驗，從而理解文化差異，為未來工作和學習中的文化交流和對本族語文化的宣傳和介紹打下語言基礎。本教材面向高校在讀本科學生，從學生的語言水平和學習需求出發，語言材料的輸入形式和課堂活動及課後練習的設定都比較靈活、新穎。
中國文化體系博大寬闊且細緻入微，考慮到教材的客群主要是大學階段的本科生，內容上選取了中國文化體系中普及性常識的層面以及和生活貼近的層面。不同於大部分現有同類教材，本教材突破了中國文化英文讀本的形式，除了中國文化知識性的介紹，還增加了任務型教學活動設計，讓學生在了解文化常識後還能在語言交際中運用。教材採取閱讀文本以及對話文本形式輸入，形式上的多樣增強了教材的可讀性、趣味性和可操作性。教材任務設計包括針對閱讀文本的閱讀理解，延展性的補充對話，針對某一文化主題進行項目研究以及圍繞中西文化對比展開的批判性思辨討論等幾個方面，思辨能力和跨文化能力的培養是本教材任務設計的出發點。書中所有圖片均拍攝于山東曲阜及北京各個博物館。
