The name "Television" comes from the Greek word "tele" meaning "far" and the Latinword "videre" meaning "to see". Thus television means "seeing far".
Television brings the world into home in sight and sound. Nowadays there are few fami-lies in the big cities that do not have TV sets. Entertaining us with singing, dancing and acting,television helps us to live happily.
Experiments leading to modern television took place more than 100 years ago. John Baird,a British inventor, found a way to send pictures by wireless. This happened in the year 1925 andit was beginning of television. It took another 30 years for television to be an industry.
Although television was developed for broadcasting, many important uses have beenfound that have nothing to do with it. For example, television makes it easy for a whole classto see everything a teacher shows. Any number of students may look through a microscope atthe same time when television does the "look" for them. It can also be used to watch processin places where it would not be safe for a human being to be present.

《英語（基本版）》是根據2000年8月頒布的《中等職業學校英語教學大綱（試行）》（以下簡稱“大綱”）組織編寫的系列教材。本系列教材包括預備級、第l～3冊、第4冊（提高本），預備級配有教師手冊、錄音帶和電子教案，其他各冊均配有練習冊、教師手冊、錄音帶、多媒體學習課件和電子教案。
本教材著力體現素質教育和能力本位的精神，注重交際套用，突出職教特色，其主要特點如下。
1．與國中英語教學相銜接、緊扣大綱
本系列教材的普通起點為國中英語教學大綱要求學生掌握的600英語詞，預備級起點為300詞，更加貼近目前中職英語教學的實際情況。本系列教材覆蓋了“大綱”的全部語法項目、所有的交際功能項目和約90%的辭彙項目。學完本系列教材第1～3冊將能達到“大綱”規定的基本要求，學完第1～4冊將達到較高要求。
2．以話題為綱和以綜合英語為基礎
本系列教材每個教學單元的各種教學活動都圍繞一個與學生日常生活密切相關的話題進行，由“綜合英語”向“聽”、“說”、“讀”、“寫”等交際技能和辭彙、語法等語言項目輻射。同時還體現了語言項目是交際的手段、交際技能是教學目的的教學思想，把語言知識作為交際的手段來教，把交際技能作為教學的目標來培養，既重視語言知識的傳授，更重視交際技能的培養。
“聽”、“說”模組結合交際功能並圍繞單元話題展開，充分體現了“大綱”突出實用性的要求。“綜合英語”模組以相關話題為綱編寫，辭彙、語法的教學均圍繞相關話題進行。“興趣閱讀”除進一步培養學生的閱讀能力外，還適當補充了與“綜合英語”模組話題相關的辭彙。

本系列教材預備級以溫故而知新的方式由日常生活對話、音標和國中語法項目逐步過渡到情景化的“聽”、“說”、“讀”、“寫”技能訓練；第1～4冊每個教學單元均包括“熱身活動”、“聽”、“說”、“綜合英語”、“興趣閱讀”、“寫作”6個模組，分別提供了大量的套用性訓練，可由教師根據所在學校的英語教學環境自由搭配，靈活使用。本系列教材還體現了以基礎英語為主、以專業英語為輔的特點，既能為文、理、工、農、醫、經貿等各類中職學校基礎英語階段的教學服務，又能為學生進入專門用途英語教學階段鋪平道路。
