本教材根據教育部2003年12月《大學英語教學大綱》和教育部2000年3月高等學校外語專業教學指導委員會英語組《高等學校英語專業英語教學大綱》編寫而成，所以，本教材適用於高等學校英語專業二、三年級的學生和廣播電視大學及師範院校本專科英語專業學生的教學，也適用於具有同等學歷的英語自學愛好者學習之用。
1.“寫”和“讀”融於一體，“寫”在“讀”中“立”，“讀”在“寫”中“導”，同時。“寫”在“讀”中提高，“讀”又增強“寫”的技能，從而達到提高學生的英語綜合表達能力。
2.與學生的實際情況相結合，從培養英語專業學生的角度出發。圍繞著專業知識中心，教給學生寫作技能，以“寫”促“學”，具有相當的實用性，針對性。
3.本教材分設有理論教學（Guided Teaching）、教學點睛（Professor’S Comments），實訓練習（Related Exercises），苦練攀高（Industrious Training）等四部分，具有較強的開放性、綜合性、實踐性和教學的可用性。
4.教材用詞行文簡明精煉，易學易懂，例句例文儘可能多而不繁。
5.教材中編設了大量的同步練習。供學生進行Project—Based Group Study。旨在教學過程中加深學生對知識的理解和接受。
6.由於寫作課的特殊性，第八單元的學習重點放在課堂上，主要分Guided Teaching。Writing Focus，Analysis and Discussion（For PBGS），Related Exercises等，學生在老師的指導下，對幾種常用的體裁進行點評式的講解。要求學生在課堂上基本接受，完全採用師生互動教與學（基於項目的團隊自主學習Project-based Group Study）。
7.第九單元主要是範文賞讀，要求學生閱讀所給的文章。根據中文提示，自己進行分析，模仿第八單元自己完成。
