《胡適英文文存3:民族危機與公共外交》選錄胡適自1912至1944年間撰寫和演講的英文文獻，胡適作為中國駐美國大使向美國乃至世界宣傳中國抗戰的性質與國際意義，爭取美國和國際社會對中國的同情與支持。《胡適英文文存》系列結集了胡適於20世紀20年代左右到60年代初之間撰寫的英文文章或英文演講，它們大多都曾發表於頗具影響的英文刊物上，並對當時的中國社會產生過重大影響。按主題分編為《中國文學與社會》、《中國哲學與思想史》和《民族危機與公共外交》三冊，由哥倫比亞大學東亞系教授周質平選編。

作者簡介
幼年就讀於家鄉私塾，19歲考取庚子賠款官費生，留學美國，師從哲學家約翰·杜威，1917年夏回國，受聘為北京大學教授。1918年加入《新青年》編輯部，大力提倡白話文，宣揚個性解放、思想自由，與陳獨秀同為新文化運動的領袖。他的文章從創作理論的角度闡述新舊文學的區別，提倡新文學創作，翻譯法國都德、莫泊桑、挪威易卜生的部分作品，又率先從事白話文學的創作。他於1917年發表的白話詩是現代文學史上的第一批新詩。胡適信奉實驗主義哲學。“五四運動”後，同李大釗、陳獨秀等接受馬克思主義的知識分子分道揚鑣，由“問題與主義之爭”開其端，倡導改良，從此改變了他“20年不談政治；20年不干政治”的態度。他於1920年代辦《努力周報》，1930年代辦《獨立評論》，1940年代辦“獨立時論社”。1938～1942年出任國民政府駐美大使。1946～1948年任北京大學校長。1949年去美國。1952年返台灣任中央研究院院長。1962年在台北病逝。
