在青少年時期，她就是阿爾斯特青年劇院的一名成員，雖然只是業餘愛好，但是在那裡她愛上了表演。
從文法學校畢業後，跟隨Fringe Benefits劇團繼續提高自己的演技。
.1980年中期，她的導師推薦她去參演愛爾蘭劇作家Christina Reid的作品“Joyriders”，Michelle贏下了這個角色並且在1986年Tricycle Theatre成功站上倫敦中型以上劇場。
上世紀90年代後期，她出演了一系列高質量的電視製作，尤其引人注意的是BBC長壽劇集"Lovejoy"(1986-94)和ITV的“摩斯警長”（Inspector Morse）(1987-2000)。
在1994年，在貝爾法斯特老博物館藝術中心，Ariel Dorfman的緊張戲劇“Death and the Maiden”的愛爾蘭首映上演驚艷回歸，劇中她飾演一個報復心強的前政治犯，反轉報復曾經對她施虐的拷問者。
此外她還參演了一些電視電影，例如1996年Channel 4頻道的犯罪劇“Comics”以及同年BBC的"The Precious Blood" 。同年在設定在貝爾法斯特的BBC喜劇"Safeand Sound" 中擔任主角，Michelle在該劇中飾演Tommy嗜酒，自由奔放的妹妹Eleanor，同時也是Dougie戀愛的對象。雖然該劇只拍攝了一季，但是卻是Michelle更廣闊的戲路的開始。
1999年她與冷麵酷星Ray Winstone共同出演喜劇"Births, Marriages and Deaths"，該劇獲得BAFTA提名。
她的戲劇生涯在1997年迎來了一個上升的高峰，在 Conor McPherson 執筆的驚悚戲劇"The Weir"中擔任女主角。該劇反響熱烈，並且從倫敦的皇家宮廷劇院（Royal Court Theater）首演後一路高歌猛進直至演到大西洋對面的百老匯，在紐約沃特科爾劇院一共上演了277場。
在舞台劇業內享有很高的聲譽，唐頓莊園中飾演Lady Mary的Michelle Dockery曾經說過自己在07年的倫敦頂級的Donmar Warehouse劇院觀看過MF參演的莎翁戲劇“奧賽羅”，並且認為“MF完全演繹出了角色在我15歲第一次讀這本戲劇時心中所想的形象”
憑藉戲劇“奧賽羅”中飾演Emilia獲得“奧利弗獎”提名（Olivier award，英國最重要的戲劇及音樂劇大獎，以著名的英國演員勞倫斯·奧利弗命名，被認為是英國戲劇屆國際性的最高榮譽，等同於英國影視藝術學院獎（BAFTA），相當於是美國百老匯的托尼獎)。
雖然在戲劇表演中的成功並沒有過渡到大熒幕上，但是她在“哈利波特與死亡聖器（上）”中飾演赫敏·格蘭傑的媽媽的驚鴻一瞥也足以引起HBO“權力的遊戲”劇組的注意，並成功為她獲得Catelyn Stark一角。
她的大熒幕履歷也時常會有些驚喜，在一些好評的電影中飾演過一些並不太重要的角色，比如1998的詹姆斯·伊沃里的"A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries"，1999年凱特·溫斯萊特的北非情人（Hideous Kinky），以及2001年妮可·基德曼的孤島驚魂（The Others）。她在奧斯卡影后朱莉·沃爾特斯兩部以真實故事改編的電影中均塑造了成功的配角，一個是在2005年ITV的"Ahead of the Class"中飾演倫敦一所問題學校的老師，另一部則是2009年Frank McGuinness執筆BBC的“在瑞士的日子”（A Short Stay in Switzerland）中飾演忠實可靠的管家。
MF出演過英國熱門電視劇,獲得2010 BAFTA最佳系列劇“超能少年”（Misfits），飾演男主角Nathan的媽媽（第1,2集）
MF將會出演2013年7月16日開播的熱門劇Suits“金裝律師”第三季，作為循環演員，飾演成功的英國石油商人，可能在第三季第三集中首次亮相。
