第一類馬蒂厄函式(Mathieu function of the first kind)是馬蒂厄方程的周期解。在馬蒂厄方程中,若a取適當的值(本徵值),而使特徵指數 μ (參見“希爾方程”)成為 0 或 i,相應地 u(z) 為以π或2π為周期的周期函式,稱為第一類馬蒂厄函式,簡稱馬蒂厄函式。根據它們的傅立葉展開形式,可以分為四種類型:
