阿瑟·柯南·道爾(Conan Doyle.A.)，英國著名小主家，因成功塑造歇洛克·福爾摩斯這一人物而成為偵探小說歷史上最重要的作家之一。他曾在愛丁堡大學學習醫學，畢業後作為隨船醫生前往西非海岸，1882年回國後開業行醫，在此期間開始寫作。1887年，《血字的研究》發表。道爾一生一共與了56篇短篇偵探小說以及4部中篇偵探小說，全部以福爾摩斯為主角。
