李承烈先生所在的教研組早在20世紀50年代開始5A分子篩吸附脫蠟的研究,取得了很好的成果,得到了廣泛的重視。李先生在教學科研工作中,比較注重國內外科研發展動態的調研。為了了解生產需要,年輕時代的李承烈還經常到工廠參與部分生產實踐,也通過CA和 CPI等檢索工具查閱大量文獻資料,了解專業發展的新動向。調研過程中,他特別注意到催化加工在改變煉油工藝,提高產品質量方面具有特殊的地位,根據石油加工中多數催化反應依賴催化劑的酸性中心來實現的特點,李承烈選定了分子篩催化做為畢生的科研方向,並著手“輕質烷烴異構化”的研究工作,較早地建立了壓力微反催化裝置,為快速而深入的進行催化劑的研試和開發工作創造了條件。為了加快異構化工藝走向工業化的步伐,李承烈帶領的研究團隊與中石化-金陵石化合作,將輕質烷烴在Pd-絲光沸石上催化異構化工藝從小試進行到中試,一直走向工業生產裝置,獲得中石化科研進步二等獎。當時的異構化反應結果和異構化反應動力學方面的成果吸引了德國Kristoffel教授的興趣, Kristoffel教授於1983-1984與李先生課題組進行了重整催化方面的合作研究。李承烈課題組在異構化領域申請專利兩項,他還主編《催化劑失活》和《烴類異構化》兩部專著,合編《Catalytic Naphtha Reforming》(G. J. Antos and A. M. Aitan主編)和《沸石催化和分離技術》兩書的部分章節。
