景公出獵，上山見虎，下澤①見蛇。歸，召晏子而問之曰：”今日寡人②出獵，上山則見虎，下澤則見蛇，殆③所謂之不祥也？”晏子曰：“國有三不祥④，是不與⑤焉。夫有賢⑥而不知，一不祥；知而不用，二不祥；用而不任⑦，三不祥也。所謂不祥，乃若此⑧者也。今上山見虎，虎之室也；下澤見蛇，蛇之穴也。如⑨虎之室，如蛇之穴而見之，曷⑩為不祥也？”

齊景公出外打獵，在山上看見了老虎，在沼澤又看見了蛇。回去之後，他召見並詢問晏子：“今天我去打獵，上山就看見老虎，下沼澤就又看見了蛇，這大概就是一般人所說的不吉利的預兆吧！”晏子回答說：“一個國家有三種不吉利，而你剛才說的都不在其內。國家的不祥是：有賢人卻不知道，這是第一不吉利；知道了卻不能任用，這是第二不吉利；任用了卻不能信任，這是第三不吉利。所謂不吉利，就是像這樣的事情。今天大王上山看見老虎，山本來就是老虎的窩呀；下沼澤看見蛇，沼澤本來就是蛇的洞穴呀！到老虎窩看到老虎，到蛇穴看到蛇，這是很正常的，怎么說是不吉利呢？”
