創作背景
葉芝的手稿中記錄了這首歌的創作背景。葉芝在愛爾蘭西部的斯萊戈郊外的村莊裡，聽見了一位年邁的農民在哼唱一首民謠，名叫The Rambling Boys of Pleasure，歌詞里就提到了Salley Gardens ("It was down by Salley’s Garden one evening late I took my way")。葉芝覺得很好聽，就過去想聽完整版。然而這位年邁的農民已經不記得完整的歌詞了。於是，葉芝就自己為這首民謠填上了詞，並命名為An Old Song Re-Sung。這首歌傳唱開後，名稱就被定為歌詞的第一句——Down by the Salley Gardens。1909年，愛爾蘭音樂家Herbert Hughes將曲調重新改編。
