《套用語言學的原理與實踐》為論文集，共收24篇論文，涉及語言教學理論和研究、第二語言習得、口頭和書面話語、國際英語、交際能力和語法 、體裁和修辭、跨文化交際、語料庫語言學、文學和文學教學、課堂實踐等。全書分為5個部分：第一部分直接探討理論及研究和教學之間的關係；第二部分討論第二語言習得；第三部分涉及話語分析、對比修辭學、間接話語、語篇對形式的影響、話語結構的作用、法律語言學、語料庫語言學等問題；第四部分論證語言教學與文學的關係，探討在外語教學過程中如何用文學作品去引導學生，使學生能逐漸閱讀更艱深的作品。另外，文中還提到要消除文學的神秘性，鼓勵用非文學方法來指引學生欣賞文學語言。最後部分是有關語言理論在課堂教學中的套用。
