The New York photographer, DaveFrieder, has actually climbed the BrooklynBridge, carrying eighty pounds of cameraequipment up the massive steel cables toone of the Gothic towers high above theEast River. From that perch, he could seepast the opposite tower, over the cityscape, and into New Jersey. "It's snch an incrediblecontrast," he says of the view. "Here's abridge built in the late 1800s standing aboveall of downtown Manhattan."
Somehow, the Brooklyn Bridge looksequally at home in Frieder's latetwentiethcentury photos and the earliest prints taken120 years ago, when it connected twoseparate cities which were then expandingonly horizontally. It's still one of the mostvisible symbols in a town that doesn't lackfor them. Behind the symbol is a story ofgenius, illness, family conflict, and a womanwho was ahead of her time.
Brooklyn is now New York City's largestborough, but 150 years ago, althoughgrowing quickly, it was considered a villageby its neighbors across the river. AlthoughBrooklyn and New York were separated byno more than a mile in places, the journeyby ferry could take more than an hour in thewinter when the East River froze over andslowed the boats. In 1852, one of thosechilled and grumpy commuters was actuallyin the position to do something about it.
