喧尼斯·鮑寧是一位老牌美國實力派演員，演藝生涯長達50多年，1950年代主演了不少電影，1960年代則在不少西部片中演出，事業後期的作品多是電視劇。曾因在《君子好逑》中的演出贏得BAFTA最佳外國男主角獎和奧斯卡及金球獎影帝，亦因在電視節目上的演出數次入圍艾美獎及金球獎。

父母為義大利人，幼年時住在米蘭，後返回康乃狄克州新哈芬讀書。1935年參加美國海軍，第二次世界大戰結束時退伍，在哈特福德蘭德爾戲劇藝術學校攻讀表演。1946年至1950年，是維吉尼亞巴特劇團中的一名成員，演了幾部電視片之後，於1951年走上銀幕，先後演出了《中國海盜》(1951)、《暴動》(1951)等片，因扮演惡棍而受到注意。接著博格寧獲得了在影片《馬蒂》(1955)中扮演獨身屠夫馬蒂這個角色的機會，他的演技獲得了國內外的一致好評，坎城國際電影節授予他最佳男主角獎，英國電影與電視藝術學院授予他最佳外國男主角獎，美國紐約電影評議家協會授予他最佳男主角獎，好萊塢外國新聞記者協會授予他劇情片最佳男主角金球獎。全美電影評議會選他為1955年最有前途的男演員。他在根據1964年的同名電影改編的電視系列片《麥克黑爾的海軍》中扮演主角――一個受人歡迎的英雄。而在我國“文化大革命”後第一部映出的美國影片《車隊》(1978)，博格寧也是主要演員之一。1955年他獲得了在影片《君子好逑》中扮演屠夫馬蒂的角色，他在此片中的表演獲得了國內外的一致好評，還獲得了奧斯卡最佳男主角獎等多個獎項。隨著這次的成功，他獲得了許多不同角色的演出機會，是至80年代著名的硬漢巨星。 歐內斯特·博格寧是美國極負盛名的性格演員，影、視、劇三棲。從外表看，他是十足的醜男，似乎只配演壞人，但其實他的表演潛力很大。演好人也同樣成功。
一九一七年一月二十四日生於康乃狄克州哈姆登。原名厄麥斯·埃弗隆·博格寧。其父母是義大利移民。小喧尼斯·鮑寧二至七歲是在米蘭度過的，後來到美國上學。從一九三六年起，他在海軍長期服役，直到第二次世界大戰結束才復員。由於對演員職業的愛好，他進入哈特福特市的蘭達爾戲劇學校專修演技。後又去維吉尼亞，加入當地一劇團。與此同時還在電視節目裡演出。 一九五一年，這位劇、視兩棲演員以其獨特的外表和深厚的功底，得到了好萊塢的青睞：哥倫比亞公司和他簽訂了拍片契約。同年，以《海盜船》一片登上銀幕。但他的那副相貌——過寬的臉膛、細小的眼睛以及一隻只漏風牙，決定了早期所扮演的角色都是壞蛋，例如《永垂不朽》里那個虐待士兵的中士，等等。 然而，在《馬蒂》（Marty）里，他撕下了兇險的醜相，讓角色以憨厚善良的面貌出現：那個叫馬蒂的中年男子舉止多么文雅，以一片真心感動了一位溫柔賢慧的女教師，兩人終成眷屬。博格寧因此角囊括了四個影帝稱號：奧斯卡獎、紐約影評獎、全美評論協會以及金球獎的最佳男主角。 從那以後，這位獎主戲路拓廣，幾乎很少演壞蛋角色了。六十年代里；“他拍攝了一部很有名氣的電視系列片《麥克哈爾的海軍生涯》，這次他演的是英雄角色。
