《冷戰時期的美國外交》一書按時間順序把冷戰時期的美國外交分為六個階段，每個階段用關鍵字總結其特點。各章節包括：國內外背景資料、本階段外交綜述、本階段主要議題和事件、本階段主要原始材料解讀、有關本階段的重要文章解讀等。
