作為“生物學中的管理科學(management theory for biology)”的研究者,俞博士從寄主管理其未知共生體以及社會利用生物多樣性為多數人謀利的角度出發,目前帶領其研究組專注於以下兩方面的科學研究:(1)建立並驗證以微生物群落為主的共生模型的博弈理論;(2)建立“高通量條形碼”技術以加快生物多樣性評估。
已階段性完成的研究:(1)保護生物學和對熱帶森林保護的方針、政策(通過建立新的方法來評估亞馬遜河流域森林中對脊椎動物狩獵的影響);(2)互利共棲的演化(闡明了榕樹-榕小蜂以及螞蟻-植物之間合作的穩定機制)。
科研項目
物種間合作的演化(互利共棲)
榕樹和榕小蜂:榕小蜂對榕樹授粉,但也將卵產於榕樹的種子內,於是植物必須採取措施限制小蜂的繁殖。我們用一個模型來解釋兩者間的互利共棲是如何得以維持的。我們研究發現榕小蜂選擇具有高收益的胚珠產卵,它迴避榕樹外部的胚珠,因為這些胚珠受寄生小蜂攻擊的機率更高。這樣,榕樹外部的胚珠能夠變成種子,從而也保證了榕
樹雌性組成的適合度。另外我們發現,在外部的胚珠上產卵需要花費更多的時間,並且外部胚珠中的雌性後代配對的可能性較小。簡言之,我們的研究展示了如何通過第三方物種使得兩個物種間的合作得以維持——即便這個第三方物種被認為是寄生的。該結果對許多互利共棲系統有重要的啟示作用,因為大多數互利共棲涉及多個物種,其中也包括寄生物種,但是,目前的大多數的理論僅涉及兩個物種。現在,我們正在研究在榕樹內限制榕小蜂壽命的機制。
經濟信息理論:目前,本人及合作者正在嘗試建立一個新的互利共棲的理論。該項工作最初開始於螞蟻-植物之間的互利共棲系統。在螞蟻-植物的互利合作關係中,植物為螞蟻提供棲居場所,作為回報,螞蟻通過巡邏保護植物不被食草動物傷害。我們的實驗發現如果植物的多數葉子都被食草動物採食後,其為螞蟻棲居的場所就會被毀掉
給螞蟻的回報與螞蟻的巡邏努力直接相關。在人類社會中一個類似的例子是學術界的晉升體制,它以發表的論文作為評判科研成果和質量的標準。
經濟學領域有一套理論可以解釋該類型的互動作用——信息經濟學。植物雇用蟻群為其工作,它們和蟻群之間存在一種支付方案,這種方案與人類的雇用契約極為類似。基於上述想法,本人聯合了六個國家的專家於2007年共同向歐洲科學基金會(European Science Foundation)提請了一項研究計畫(BIOCONTRACT: The Evolution of Cooperation and Trading,)。現在我們正在設計模型,期望能了解宿主何時會對共生體懲罰或獎勵?這種懲罰或獎勵的“度”是多少?宿主何時能使共生體產生“自我篩選”(selfscreen),使得只有互利共棲的共生體才能進入宿主體內?
在先前的工作中,本人和同事利用螞蟻-植物的共生關係,建立並首次成功驗證了一個物種共存的空間生態學模型。下一步我們將在已有的基礎上利用遺傳空間結構(spatial genetic structure)推斷物種的擴散距離。
