本書試圖以文化自覺的態度和文化批評的方法，從不同的文化模式是人類多樣化的智慧所選擇的結果這樣一個觀念出發，在梳理中國傳統敘事審美文化獨特的風格和智慧時，考察中國敘事審美文化傳統賦予電視劇獨立的藝術精神和文化品質，正確理解在全球化經濟文化環境下，中國電視劇敘事在適應文化產業化的發展進程中，對全球化敘事模式，尤其是美國電視劇的標準化、產業化敘事類型模式的借鑑。
全書共分為六章：1、全球化與影視文化傳播；2、全球化語境中的中國影視文化自覺；3、民族敘事審美文化傳統對中國電視劇的影響；4、制約電視劇敘事的文化聯合機制；5、中國電視劇敘事的類型化及其民族化；6、中國電視劇民族化、類型化敘事範本的文化批評六個方面展開論述。並從中華文化獨具特色的生活模式、文化觀念、審美傳統和藝術精神出發，提出三個創新觀點：第一，電視劇是當代中國社會最有影響力的敘事藝術形式之一。第二，電視劇最集中地體現著中國敘事審美文化傳統的現實文化意義，是有效傳播中華文化，維護中華民族獨特的審美文化傳統和藝術品質，保持民族審美趣味和藝術精神的獨立性，形成世界文化多元性和多樣性的重要文化文本。第三，電視劇是中國影視文化抗拒“文化帝國主義”，抗拒好萊塢斷國際影視文化市場，保住中國這塊被西方稱為影視競爭“最後的疆場”，最具優勢的文化產品。
