這句成語出自聖經的《馬太福音》。在古時候，猶太人將白晝分為12個小時。有個闊人想雇幾個人到他的園子裡去幹活，他從早上五點就開始僱人，僱到最後一個人時已經是夜裡很晚了。幹完活後付工錢，結果大早上來的和夜裡來的都一視同仁地得到了一枚銀幣，弄的一大早就開始幹活的人極為不滿，早知如此，還不如夜裡十一點鐘來呢，因為只要不超過十二點，都能得到同樣的報酬。很像中國的一句諺語：來的早不如來的巧。
