Adler生於紐約皇后區的一個猶太家庭，是家中的長子。他們家搬了許多次，最終畢業於Horizon高中。畢業 之後搬到洛杉磯追求演藝生活。他有一個弟弟，Jake，1992年出生。

在不斷的試鏡後，福克斯公司決定讓他出演Glee中有些許可惡的Dave Karofsky一角。他的表演給製作人留下了深刻的印象，於是決定給他更多的戲份。在2010年11月的一集“Never Been Kissed”中，他成了一個不願出櫃的校園同志，並和已出櫃的同志Kurt激吻。很令他驚奇的是，在這一集播出之後，反響很大，無數人在Twitter和Facebook上評論他，說他是“大多數人的代表”。而在3x14“On My Way”中，因被告發出櫃而試圖自殺，然而未遂。
