Kurt Cobain在1992年的早期寫下了這首歌。他一度忘記了這首歌，但當他和他的妻子Courtney Love搬到好萊塢山上的一幢房子後他又繼續開始這首歌的創作。在1994年《滾石》雜誌一次對Courtney Love的採訪中Love提到，她無意中聽到了Cobain在儲藏室里寫那首歌的riff，她問他她能不能把那段riff用在她自己的某一首歌里——“滾!”，Cobain咆哮著答道，並關上了儲藏室的門。“他試著把動靜弄得不那么大，”Love說，“但我還是在樓下聽到了。”這首歌的名字取源於Love給Cobain的一個心形盒子，然而，Cobain最先把這首歌取名為"Heart-Shaped Coffin"（心形棺材）。
