He was known to Americans and to the world as a plain-spoken man of inventive genius who, through self-education and discipline, applied his talents to the solution of practical problems of substance and intrinsic interests. Even though he professed to despise money as an end, he acquired large amounts of it and turned much of it back into his experiments and laboratories. He was born in a plain house in Milan, Ohio in 1847, the son of the owner of a mill for making wood shingles; he lived, decades later, in a handsome house on the hill in West Orange, New Jersey with a lovely wife of social position and wealth. Skilled mechanics, cocky young inventors, and enterprising, practical-minded engineers were good, robust company for him, but he also read the good books, enjoyed theatre of quality, and found congenial the conversations of academic scientists. Professor Hughes is with the Department of History and Sociology of Science, University of Pennsylvania
