Christopher Marlowe 克里斯托夫·馬洛（1564——1593）出生在坎特伯雷鞋商之家。在劍橋期間，他開始致力於文學創作。他的劇作《帖木兒》就是他從劍橋畢業前完成的，一經演出便大獲成功。1584年，他來到倫敦，深受文藝復興思潮的影響，這在他的劇作《浮士德博士的悲劇》中有所體現。

馬洛是當時“大學才子”（即：莎士比亞之前英國人文主義戲劇家的總稱）中最富才華的人。在他短暫的一生中，他完成了六部劇本的創作。其中最富有名的有《帖木兒》.（上卷與下卷1587-1588)"Tamburlaine,Parts I , II(1587-1588)《浮士德博士的悲劇》（1589？）"Dr.Faustus(1589?)《馬爾他島的猶太人》（1590？）"The Jew of Malta"(1590?)以及《愛德華二世》（1592-1593）"Edward II"(1592-1593)。除劇本外，馬洛還寫了《海洛與勒安德爾》"Hero and Leander"和《激情的牧人致心愛的姑娘》"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love"兩首詩，並翻譯了古羅馬詩人奧維德的《愛的藝術》(a verse translation of Ovid's Amores").
