Billie Joe在這張專輯中，自稱這張專輯是朋克搖滾史詩，實際上也正是如此，只不過有些部分的音樂表現已經不是純粹的朋克了。在整張專輯中Green Day樂隊以戰爭日記的形式表述了自己的政治立場，專輯中刻畫了一個名為“St. Jimmy”的人物，而很多話也是借著“St. Jimmy”的口說出來的，而直到“St. Jimmy”的死也都是濃墨重彩的表現的。專輯裡，Green Day樂隊像藝術搖滾一樣給單曲玩起了“樂章”，兩首9分多鐘的單曲都被分成了五個段落，講述了戰爭中的故事。《Jesus Of Suburbia》第二段落《City Of The Damned》以及第五段落《Tales Of Another Broken Home》中的鋼琴獨聲伴奏表現了怒吼後的心聲，這支九分鐘的單曲就像是他們通過音樂對美國的控訴。而另一首9分鐘的巨著則是講述St. Jimmy的死，《Homecoming》的標題不由令人想起了越南戰爭時美國大兵的經典遺言“我想回家”。整張專輯連貫一體，以朋克為基調，輔以各種靈活的音樂風格作為襯托，通過一個個小的組成部分多角度的表現了Green Day對美國的政治和戰爭喧泄。
