事實上，「Seasons in the Sun」絕對不是一首愉快的曲子，甚至還十分的傷感。它是一位法國歌手Jacques Brel的作品，原名叫做「Le Moribond」（臨終的人），發表於1961年。歌曲的內容大致描述一個罹患癌症、不久於人世的男子，在面臨死亡的時候，對父親、妻子以及摯友的依依難捨。
再創作
Brel私交相當不錯的美國詩人歌手Rod McKuen，很早就把這首歌曲翻譯成英文的「Seasons in the Sun」，並且在1964年由民歌界元老的Kingston Trio率先灌錄成唱片，不過當時並沒有造成太大的轟動。後來，跟Rod McKuen頗有交情的Terry Jacks把它重新灌錄，在1974年的三月二日獲得全美排行三周冠軍，原本也沒有在中國受到太多注意，直到幾年之後，才因為柯達的廣告而在台灣造成了瘋狂的流行，只可惜主唱人Terry Jacks當時早就在歌壇消失了。這位男歌手留下來的歌曲本來就不多，不過這首歌卻成了經典——儘管他的詮釋老實說有點失真。
新主唱歷史
來自加拿大的Terry Jacks成長於溫哥華，高中時代曾經贏得藝術獎學金，但是在建築師、職業高爾夫與音樂這三種行業中，他卻選擇了後者，並且自組了一支The Chessman樂隊，不過並不成功。有一次，他的樂隊應邀上電視表演，使他結識了一位漂亮的女歌手Susan Pesklevits，兩人一見鐘情，隨即結婚、並且展開音樂事業上的合作。
由於當時的唱片市場上，似乎以合唱團比較吃香，所以儘管只有他老婆一個人獨唱，他們還是決定用The Poppy Family為名，並且在1970年以獲得美國排行亞軍的「Which Way You Goin' Billy」一曲成名。可惜的是，這對夫妻在1973年就宣告分手了。
離婚之後，Terry Jacks繼續在歌壇奮鬥。由於吉他彈得不錯，他應邀為Beach Boys伴奏。有一次，在錄音的時候，他建議Beach Boys灌錄「Seasons in the Sun」這首歌。不過，錄完之後，可能是由於效果不如理想，Beach Boys決定不發行。而極為喜愛這首歌的Terry則為了追悼一位意外過世的好友，決定自己來灌唱。
Terry取得作者的同意，把最後一段歌詞稍加修改，同時以輕快的節奏處理，使歌曲顯得輕鬆一些，可是完工之後，在架子上一擺就是一年。有一天，他把帶子放出來聽，正好一位年輕的送報生來到他家，聽到了這首歌，於是要求是否可以帶自己的朋友過來欣賞。
使Terry決定自己發行這首歌曲。果然，這首歌在加拿大造成了轟動，美國的唱片公司也慕名而來，取得了發行權。1974年三月，這首歌不但獲得三周排行冠軍，更成了金唱片，銷售達六百多萬張，使他名揚四海。不久之後，他又灌錄了另外一首同樣由McKuen翻譯成英語的Brel作品「If You Go Away」，也得到了不錯的成績。可惜的是，他在歌壇只是曇花一現，一年之後就銷聲匿跡了。

說的是1963年的冬季，美國冷得徹骨，來美國樂壇闖蕩的加拿大男孩Terry Jacks坐在沒有暖氣的屋子裡喝著白蘭地，耳邊放著法國歌手Jacques Brel的《Lemoribond》。來美國也不少日子了，但卻沒有音樂人對他的音樂感興趣。他看起剛剛朋友塞給他的一張名片，背後抄了一個死刑犯的臨終遺言，聽著《Lemoribond》，看著名片背後的字，他拿起了吉他開始輕輕彈唱……
“在五十年代美國的一個小鎮上，有兩位少年，我們暫且稱之為A和C吧。A和C出生於同一個社區，從小一塊兒長大，他們總是一起爬樹、遊戲，有時候還一起乾一些出格的事。反正無論如何他們都形影不離，即便是上學，他們也都是在同一個班級，如此一直到高中。A和C雖然是絕好的朋友，但他們卻性格迥異。A絕對是那種你看一眼就為之傾倒的男孩：他活力十足，開朗陽光，自信，對運動也十分在行，因而人緣頗好，全校中暗戀他的女生不計其數，他還是學校橄欖球隊的隊長。而C的性格卻恰恰相反，他很敏感害羞，不善於表達自己的情感，但是他的手工卻很棒，會做各種模型。
“一切過的都很不錯，但上帝卻很折磨人，他讓這兩個男孩同時愛上了B，性感迷人的班花。結果可想而知，C默默地注視著他的朋友和愛人在一起……一直到了畢業，C成了一名木匠；而A當了卡車司機，並和B結了婚，婚後生下了女兒Michelle，B也經營了一家雜貨店，那是她的嫁妝。然而，為了讓家人生活得更好，讓女兒能獲得良好的教育，A不得不跨好幾個州甚至橫跨整個美國去運送貨物，因而一個月只能回家一兩趟來看看家人，隔一天又要坐車去送貨了。相比之下，作為木匠的C就輕鬆多了，所以他經常來雜貨店給B幫忙。
“但是時間一天天過去了，B和C日日相對，兩顆孤獨的心越靠越近，逐漸產生了超越朋友之間的那種感情，那種感情維繫了兩年，而A卻絲毫沒有察覺，他依舊疼愛家人，信任朋友……
“在1959年的隆冬，A依舊開著卡車上了洲際公路，但是連天的大雪使公路被封閉了，人們不得不等待公路的解封。但A等了兩天，情況似乎不見好轉，天氣預報說這種惡劣的天氣還將持續一周，於是A掉轉車頭開回了家，這一開又過了三天。半夜兩點終於快到家了，他下車滿心歡喜地給家裡打了電話，但遲遲沒人接聽。A很擔心，想到是不是女兒生病住院了。他立即開車去了C家，想打聽家裡的情況。他敲開了c家的門，在他眼前的竟然是兩個人——他的朋友和他的妻子！這種場面即便A再遲鈍也立刻明白髮生了什麼事，他望著眼前這兩個人，只說了一個字'Why？'這種問題哪裡給出答案！A掏出防身用的手槍結束了妻子和朋友的性命，然後駕車徑直駛往警察局。
“他原本可以逃往臨州免於死刑，但他選擇了徑直去警察局，在本州審判，陪審團一致通過他犯故意殺人罪，被判處死刑，於1957年2月6日執行電椅死刑。他被關在死囚牢里，離行刑還有三天，一張紙和一支筆塞了進來，給他寫臨終的遺言。”
法律上
雖然在法律上，A犯了故意殺人罪；但在民間，許多人卻認為在道義上a也是極大的受害者。於是，人們紛紛傳抄他的遺言，Terry Jacks在1963年拿到的那張名片背面的遺言，就是朋友抄的。terry jacks將a的遺言填入《Lemoribond》的曲中寫成了《Seasons in the sun》。他四處給音樂人彈唱這首歌，但哪個音樂人會給一個無名之輩投資呢？最終，他找到了Beach Boys，把這首歌唱給他們聽。這首歌很棒，Beach Boys自己將這首翻唱，可惜他們無法傳遞出這首歌的情感，於是Terry Jacks借了錄音棚把這首歌錄了一遍。然而因為他們當時專輯的歌滿了，沒有將此歌收錄進去。直到十年之後，1973年，這首歌終於一炮而紅，之後有許多翻唱的版本。 在第二種歌曲背景下，對歌詞做點解釋： 和大家常看到的不同，都是We have joy，we have fun Westlife版是We had joy，we had fun 原版是用“have”的，表示作者的一種希望之情，他希望能永遠快樂，但是死亡逼近，已經永遠不可能了。
