最早是出現在米高梅公司於1939年出品的童話音樂片《綠野仙蹤》（The Wizard of OZ）。

在第12屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮中，這部電影獲得了最佳原創音樂和最佳歌曲獎。

《綠野仙蹤》在開始時是黑白片，在小女孩進入夢境後變成了彩色畫面，並配上《飛躍彩虹》的音樂，讓許多人留下童年璀璨的回憶。

這首由哈羅德·阿倫（Harold Arlen）作曲的歌曲融合了流行音樂和美洲黑人音樂的風格，在片中由朱迪嘉蘭演唱，曾在排行榜首位達7周之久。此後還多次被人翻唱，被譽為最成功的電影歌曲之一。

1990年3月舉行的第62屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮上，當著名歌星黛安娜·羅絲（Diana Ross）上台演唱這首半個世紀以前誕生的電影歌曲時，台下所有來賓，白髮蒼蒼的老藝術家和初出茅廬的新秀們竟同聲高唱，場面極為感人。
