Highly regarded, award-laden film chronicles eventful Apollo 13 mission to the moon, heartbreakingly aborted late during trip due to an explosion aboard command module that jeopardized lives of crew and their ability to return safely back to earth. Horner did prepare a disc of 59 minutes of his music for internal Academy Award consideration but it never saw commercial release. Finally, through the combined cooperation of UMG, Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment, Intrada proudly presents for the first time ever the entire score by Horner, both in the versions heard in the film lasting 76 minutes on CD 1, and in the selections Horner prepared for promotional purposes running 59 minutes which included several alternate versions and different performances of certain cues on CD 2. Inspired by Homer’s The Iliad, vivid telling of events surrounding the Trojan War brings alive many iconic characters and images so well remembered even today: Helen Of Troy, “the face that launched a thousand ships”, Paris, Hector, that infamous Greek gift, the Trojan horse, Agamemnon, Priam, Menelaus, Odysseus… and towering above all, Achilles, immortal warrior born of Thetis and Peleus, invincible in battle save his one vulnerability: the heel. Complete James Horner soundtrack soars on 2-CD set! One of Horner’s most popular scores, one he was particularly fond of, lands with more than 20 minutes of previously unreleased score! Walt Disney Pictures presents, Joe Johnston directs, Bill Campbell, Alan Arvin, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Sorvino, Timothy Dalton star. 1938. Nazi’s on the rise. All-American pilot Cliff Secord finds jetpack, suddenly becomes crimefighting hero The Rocketeer. Jenny Blake is his sweetheart, Neville Sinclair his evil nemesis, Peevy his mentor. All become embroiled in rip-roaring heroics and dazzling derring-do. Flying high alongside them is incredibly rousing, tuneful James Horner score. Primary theme for Cliff’s aerial exploits and dashing rescues anchors the action, dark low brass motif for Sinclair provides edged contrast. Gorgeous love theme also has its say, especially in richly developed treatment Horner recorded especially for the album. Even a couple of big-band standards in fresh arrangements made by legendary Billy May (Horner was particularly fond of 30’s and 40’s-era swing music) appear in both picture and album. Orchestral spotlight goes to “The Flying Circus”, an exciting tour-de-force for orchestra. Trumpets get a sizzling workout! Supercharged action also rears with “South Seas Send Up” (titled “Jenny’s Rescue” on the 1991 album) plus lengthy action finale, “The Zeppelin”. New cues include important early sequences “The Gizmo”, “Finding The Rocket”. Other new highlights: “Testing The Rocket”, “The Laughing Bandit”, “Lothar Gets Wilmer”. CD 1 (and part of CD 2) features everything Horner recorded for the film, including all scoring cues intact and uncut plus both big-band arrangements. Horner was fond of his 1991 album presentation, featuring his favorite highlights, often with unique edits, special takes and album remixes. Intrada happily keeps that album intact on CD 2. World premiere expanded CD of early James Horner score for exciting crime thriller set in Moscow, directed by Michael Apted from Martin Cruz Smith novel, starring William Hurt, Lee Marvin, Brian Dennehy, Joanna Pacula. Horner takes inspiration from icy cold murder site ambiance in night-time Gorky Park, launches with intense cluster of chimes, pizzicato bass, swelling brass to establish oppressive mood. Suddenly the soaring melodic strains of Tchaikovsky overtake grimness with splash of color for skaters unaware of faceless dead bodies nearby. With this stunning opening, Horner already works both drama, locale into his dynamic score. Composer will use similar original score/Tchaikovsky overdub technique throughout score. As story moves through suspenseful investigation, tender love, riveting chases, Horner fluidly responds with his compelling music following suit. Love theme is memorable. Ditto aggressive action cues. Score has seen several previous truncated 36-minute releases but all of them suffered from odd audio mix rendering several cues in mono, especially those featuring strings such as with gorgeous love theme. (Film itself was in mono.) To present entire score in true stereo for first time, courtesy MGM, Intrada went back to original session masters made by Dan Wallin at Record Plant Recording Studios on 2' 24-track tape, then subsequently mixed by Wallin down to 1/2' multi-track stereo, then finally to brand new two-track stereo mixes for our CD. Working with these mixes, we discovered Horner had scored several cues with alternate versions, all of which are included as 'extras' in this CD. Other new highlights include striking motif for 'Andreev', who recreates murder victim's faces, exciting 'Pasha And Golodkin Shot', fiercely rhythmic 'Setting Up The Deal' plus several others. Extra treat! Working with multi-tracks allows us to present all cues containing Tchaikovsky overdubs in both familiar final versions plus in Horner score-only versions for interesting study in contrasts. Finally, Horner wrote cocktail piano source cue ('Stockholm Salted Peanuts') for late sequence in picture and nostalgic, bittersweet piece appears as closing extra to wrap generous-length CD. James Horner's score for director Vadim Perelman's film adaptation of Laura Kasischke's novel The Life Before Her Eyes, starring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood, is low-key to the point of being minimalist much of the time. A keening voice, sustained strings, synthesizer washes, slow piano notes (played by the composer), and the occasional intrusion of a sort of musical buzz-saw sound (possibly the guitar of George Doering or created by synthesizer) characterize the long cues, which recall Brian Eno's ambient recordings and some especially quiet new age music. In addition to that buzz saw, the music gets loud momentarily during "Diana Gets Hit by a Car," presumably to accompany the moment of impact, and at the start of the final 12-minute track, "Young Diana's Future — A Future That Could Have Been...." Musically, that future doesn't sound much different from the present, except for being played at a bit higher volume. This is a calm but intense score for a film drama with similar qualities.

Apocalypto was Mel Gibson's semi-controversial follow-up to his very controversial film The Passion of the Christ. While some critics praised the film, about the fall of Mayan civilization, for its sweeping vistas, period details and overall visceral experience, others skewered it for its relentlessly savage violence and called it a pretentious, indulgent exercise in overkill. James Horner's soundtrack is evocative of something ancient, with its echoey woodwinds, pounding jungle drums and droning synthetic rumbles, but whether it's an accurate evocation of the time and place depicted in the film is anyone's guess — one would have to be fairly well schooled in Mayan culture to know that. Ultimately a soundtrack has to stand on its own anyway, and Apocalypto does. Using vocal solos from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, nephew of the legendary Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as well as ominous throat singing, the music mostly trickles under the surface, periodically punctuated by bursts of excitement, making for a mostly passive listening experience that turns into a participatory one once it gets charged up. It's a shame, really, that a piece of largely ambient music as dynamic and sensually thrilling as this had to be attached to a Gibson project; because of the baggage the director's name carried at the time of the film's release, anything associated with it was guaranteed to be met with preconceptions. But Horner's soundtracks have never been about making a grand statement, but rather enhancing the larger work, and Apocalypto succeeds at that.

Oscar-winning composer James Horner returns to the land of swashbuckling romance with The Legend of Zorro. Horner incorporates numerous motifs, mainly the love theme and the rousing title sequence from the first film, but infuses them with more regional instrumentation (castanets, gut-string guitars, trumpets). This makes for an agreeable score that's almost professional to a fault, as Horner could do this in his sleep. Sequels are tricky for both the director and the composer alike, especially if there is a seven-year gap between projects, as the drive to keep the momentum both familiar and fresh can dilute the creative process. The Legend of Zorro will please its target audience, as its lauded composer has mastered the art of reliability. It's an old story with a comfortable history and Horner's score reflects that.

The soundtrack to Chumscrubber — not to be confused with the similarly named coming-of-age film Thumbsucker — features a handful of pleasant, middling alt-rock songs and James Horner's darkly mischievous score. The sleepy cover of "Our House" by Phantom Planet (who are becoming nearly as ubiquitous on soundtracks from the 2000s as Smash Mouth were in the '90s) and Placebo's shimmery, druggy "Pure Morning" are the standouts among the rock tracks and capture the film's ironic take on suburbia. Meanwhile, Horner's score focuses on tiptoeing strings and xylophones and whimsical reed and piano melodies that nevertheless have palpable undercurrents of tension and danger, particularly on "Spreading Happiness All Around," "Pot Casserole," and "Digging Montage." However, the noisy, clanky guitar antics on "Parental Rift/The Chumscrubber" are just as obvious and heavy-handed as the track's name implies. While the score effectively sets the mood, it's not among Horner's most distinguished work, and the rock songs aren't especially creative, so it's hard to imagine Chumscrubber appealing to anyone except die-hard fans of Horner or the film.

James Horner's score for The Spiderwick Chronicles is suitably dramatic, if not particularly inspired. It seems odd that the composer who also provided the evocative score for Titanic wouldn't use the opportunity of a children's fantasy film to create at least one memorable theme, but that seems to be the case here — unlike similar scores (John Williams' iconic music for the Harry Potter series comes to mind), there are no recurring movements on The Spiderwick Chronicles that signal or symbolize characters and plot twists. Despite its resemblance to some of Williams' more whimsical works, the score ends up feeling restrained and unable to keep up with the adventurous plot it's meant to accompany. The Spiderwick Chronicles sounds fine, but there isn't much heart in it.

Oscar-winning composer James Horner's taut score for the Jodie Foster airplane thriller Flightplan may break little ground for the suspense genre, but it's as effective a template for fear as one could hope for. Utilizing his signature melodic percussion, along with sweeping strings and some spooky X-Files-style piano, the man who composed "My Heart Will Go On" for Celine Dion finds himself in a much darker frame of mind than when he held the baton for the sinking of the Titantic — Flightplan's brooding melodic backbone (and this may be simply due to the involvement of Foster) is eerily reminiscent of the descending string motifs from Silence of the Lambs. Even on autopilot Horner is no slouch, as his attention to detail and tasteful arranging ultimately keep listeners engaged, even if they've heard it all before.

Originally composed by Gabriel Yared — his score was axed after it was deemed too "old-fashioned" at a test screening — the music that accompanies Achilles and Hector through their many trials and tribulations is predictably reminiscent of Gladiator , incorporating Middle Eastern female vocalists into hypnotic string cues and thunderous percussion over endless action sequences. When replacement composer James Horner isn't mining the Mideast, he's riding into the sunset on a decidedly non-Trojan horse. To his credit, the talented veteran had very little time in which to write and prepare let alone produce Troy , but his take on the Greek legend feels more like a Western, and not a very good one either — it would be interesting to hear Yared's "old-fashioned" version against this. It's not an awful score, and some of the themes resonate with the subject matter, particularly "The Temple of Poseidon," which blends the two styles successfully, but memorable? No. Also, the inclusion of "Remember Me," a duet between Josh Groban and Tanja Tzarovska, deserves mention, as it is the audio equivalent of the gag reflex.

James Horner has long coasted by regurgitating elements of his previous scores, but 2004's Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius is tantamount to grand theft — its appropriation of melodies and motifs from earlier Horner scores like Braveheart and Glory is so blatant that one could plug reviews of those soundtracks into this space and change nothing but the titles. Like Braveheart, Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius not only creates Celtic fanfares from blaring pipes and pounding drums, but it also employs themes borrowed note for note from the same score — moreover, the music is shamelessly manipulative, manufacturing drama and emotion from sweeping but painfully trite arrangements your average moviegoer has heard time and again.

One of James Horner's most hushed works, House of Sand and Fog is an aptly brooding, implosive musical counterpart to Vadim Perleman's adaptation of Andre Dubus III's heartbreaking, and bestselling, novel. Horner captures the aspirations of the Behranis, a family of Irani immigrants, in the score's opening tracks. Pieces such as "An Older Life" and "Waves of the Caspian Sea" are quietly hopeful, string-driven compositions that feel like they're going to blossom into the kind of lush, sentimental pieces for which Horner is renowned — but they never do. Likewise, "'This Is No Longer Your House'" and "Kathy's Night" reflect the seeping frustration of Kathy Nicolo, an alcoholic young woman forced to give up her family's house, which the Behranis buy soon after. The musical themes of Nicolo and the Behranis come together, in a subdued manner on "Parallel Lives, Parallel Loves" and more urgently on "The Shooting, a Payment for Our Sins." But even the score's most dramatic moments are understated, providing more of a backdrop for the film's events than a commentary on them. Regret and nostalgia dominate House of Sand and Fog , particularly on "Behrani's Thoughts - Long Ago," "The Dreams of Kings," and "'We Have Traveled So Far, It Is Time to Return to Our Path'." These aren't the easiest emotions to depict in music, but Horner does an admirable job of turning these subtle emotions into a compelling score.

James Horner excels at crafting bright, soaring melodies that stir the feelings of multiplex visitors and cling determinedly to their brains on the way home. It is a skill well suited to sweeping tales of heroism like Titanic, Apollo 13, and Braveheart, all of which he scored to great acclaim. But some of his finest work has been for smaller-scale pictures like Field of Dreams and A Beautiful Mind. These quiet dramas allow Horner to indulge his predilection for the uplifting and optimistic while scaling back on bombast (though usually not quite enough on gooey sentimentality). Iris is one of those softer scores. Centered around winding, vermiculated violin solos performed by classical music heartthrob Joshua Bell, Horner highlights glimmering silver linings in the potentially depressing story of Iris Murdoch's losing battle with Alzheimer's disease. Judging from the soundtrack alone, a listener might think that Iris actually is the cheery love story depicted in Miramax's pandering ad campaign rather than a painful portrayal of a great mind on a long, slow march toward oblivion. But the sweetness of the score is often perfectly pitched in the context of the film, emphasizing the beauty of Murdoch's life rather than the tragedy of her death. Horner draws liberally from his Field of Dreams bag of tricks, weaving mysteriously shimmering synthesizers and softly crashing cymbals into the largely string-based score. Bell's contributions are effective, even if Horner's work doesn't give him as much opportunity to show off as John Corigliano's Red Violin score did. But that would have been inappropriate; simplicity is one of the strengths of this composition.

Long before he became an Oscar winner for Titanic, James Horner struggled through considerably lower-profile projects, such as these efforts for a pair of cheesy Roger Corman films. The music for Battle Beyond the Stars acts as a Star Wars wannabe, much like the film itself. The music also owes a lot to Jerry Goldsmith's magnificent score for the first Star Trek movie. Ironically, this is also the music that landed Horner the job of scoring Star Trek II. It's a fun listen, especially when the trumpet section struggles to keep up with the demands of the music (i.e., midway through track five). A lot of the riffs introduced here return in Horner's Star Trek and Aliens scores, so don't be surprised if the music sounds familiar. Humanoids of the Deep is a much more generic, ominous, and unremarkable score for a similarly generic horror film. Again, one can hear portents of things to come (and even similarities to portions of Battle Beyond the Stars). Horner fans will get a real kick out of this recording, but there's plenty to offer the sci-fi and horror music buff as well.

Given the longevity of his career, it's somewhat surprising to note that 2001's Enemy at the Gates represents composer James Horner's first foray into the World War II milieu, and while the score cherry-picks a handful of elements from previous Horner efforts spanning from Glory to Willow, it's nevertheless his most accomplished and original work in some time. A bleak, melancholy work nevertheless punctuated by moments of sweeping symphonic beauty, Enemy at the Gates exhibits a musical and emotional economy rare in the Horner canon – when the drama finally erupts, it means something. Fans of the composer will find much to savor here, and even detractors will discover passages meriting commendation.

Horner's sweeping, portentous score mirrors the true story of the crew of the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat caught in a deadly Northeaster in 1991. Despite somewhat overblown tendencies on some pieces, the album is a dramatic and emotional piece of film music for an equally gripping movie. Indeed, the score for The Perfect Storm may prove to be as popular as Horner's Titanic music. The album also includes John Mellencamp's theme for the film, "Yours Forever."

James Horner is one of the most prolific film scorers of his day, but not one of the most original, and his accidentally best-selling score for Titanic, a characteristic combination of lush romantic passages and melodramatic bombast, casts a long shadow over subsequent work such as this score, which copies many of the earlier one's effects, down to the Scottish pipes of which the composer is so fond. Horner's work always seems to exaggerate the other elements in the film, making him perfect for subjects that are already outsized, and so just as he was a good choice for the over-the-top (or was it under-the-bottom?) nature of Titanic, he was right for this film remake about a giant ape. And if you really loved those pipes on the Titanic score, you'll find more to like here.

Titanic was a phenomenon in more ways than one. It was certainly unheard of for a film to break the billion-dollar barrier, but it was also unheard of for a largely instrumental soundtrack album to stay on top of the music charts for weeks on end. And it was James Horner's instrumentals that did it, too — if it was just Celine Dion's single keeping it there, her own album would have fallen down the charts. So, Horner's Titanic was a blockbuster on par with the film, but there was one thing that distinguished it from James Cameron's movie — there could be a sequel to the soundtrack. Both Sony Classical and Horner realized this simple fact, so they released Back to Titanic to coincide with the video release of Titanic in late summer 1998. Since much of his original score was on the original soundtrack, he had only a little bit of unreleased music for Back to Titanic. No problem — fill out the rest of the album with Celtic music that served as inspiration for Horner and Cameron (Enya, however, is curiously absent), and add a new version of "My Heart Will Go On" that has film dialogue layered over the original recording, à la the popular radio-play version of Bruce Springsteen's Jerry Maguire love theme, "Secret Garden." The end result may be a little padded, but it's no less enjoyable, even if Back to Titanic doesn't hit the heights of its predecessor.

James Horner brought epic romance and Enya to his Titanic score. For The Mask of Zorro, his first major work since Titanic, he recaptured much of the same territory, but if anything this score is richer and more varied. Blowing up Latin and Mexican motifs to cinemascope size, Horner doesn't trade in subtlety. He prefers large gestures, and that's what his sweeping, melodramatic score for The Mask of Zorro is all about. It's not something that fans of such sophisticated film composers like Bernard Herrmann will like, but it is exciting populist music that matches the spirit of the adventure movie. The album contains one vocal track – the love theme "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You," as performed by Tina Arena and Marc Anthony.

His score is grand, without falling into typical melodrama, and delicately romantic, without being sickly sentimental; it offers genuine emotion and excitement, with the haunting vocals of Norwegian singer Sissel providing a nice counterpoint to Horner's blend of strings, vocals, orchestras, and synthesizers. Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" may feel a little like an afterthought, especially after experiencing Horner's wrenching, affecting score, but its heart is in the right place. Nevertheless, it is Horner's instrumental work and its whirlwind of emotions that makes the score of Titanic a voyage worth repeating.

James Horner's score to the 1992 Harrison Ford thriller Patriot Games employed traditional Celtic arrangements and instruments to spotlight the film's IRA antagonists – five years later, Horner, Ford, and the IRA meet again for The Devil's Own, and to the surprise of absolutely no one the composer simply rehashes the same approach he employed the first time around. With its emphasis on pan pipes, tin whistles, and jig-like rhythms, this is by no means a conventional action score, but Horner's music is so stereotypically Irish that you can't help but wonder if he wore a leprechaun costume while conducting the orchestra. The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan also contributes an original song, "God Be with You."

Eschewing the large-scale orchestral approach for which James Horner is best known — and for which this brain-dead entry in the domestic thriller genre would seem ideally suited — Unlawful Entry is a disappointingly tepid exercise in suspense that manages to generate virtually no tension thanks to its rinky-dink electronics and plodding melodies. Not exactly the most innovative composer to begin with, Horner seems bankrupt of interesting ideas here — the music languishes without purpose or direction, employing sterile synthesizers that further obscure any sense of human passion.

Before Titanic, James Horner was not above composing scores for cartoonish family films, and many of those that brought him on their production board owe him greatly. The Rocketeer directed by Joe Johnston (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, October Sky) entails the story of a young pilot during World War II who happens upon a rocket pack that allows him to fly. The film is based on the tradition of old film serials that left theater-goers hanging with "To be continued," and aside from modern production, it is old fashioned and innocent fun. Horner's score begins and ends with the brilliant "Main Title," which is so moving it was used in previews for later films that did not yet have finished scores. Most of the Rocketeer soundtrack elicits the adventure and lifting spirit of the film and reveals how Horner incorporates rich instrumentals in the tiniest crevices. Even when the film involves danger, as in "Jenny's Rescue," the composer takes care when it is hardly even required. Instead of some "duh-duh-duhs," he brings on a full, stunning orchestra and when he overdoes it, it is in a jolly way — he never exhausts his medium. That is what separates him from inferior composers, and what makes a nice film like The Rocketeer extra nice. It is a soundtrack worth listening to, and Melora Hardin's covers of E.A. Swan's "When Your Lover Has Gone" and Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" add just the right touch of '40s authenticity.

While Class Action sidesteps the overkill that afflicts so many James Horner scores, its emphasis on low-key, mood-driven themes nevertheless proves dreadfully dull—so much so that, offered the choice between boredom or bombast, the listener may decide the former ain't so bad after all. Employing a stripped-bare ensemble of synthesizer, piano and saxophone, Horner sleepwalks his way through a series of tepidly atmospheric themes so weightless it seems they could dissipate at any moment—not a single memorable melody rises to the fore, and the dearth of creativity is matched only by the composer's obvious absence of passion in his work.

This recording features Phillip Glaser, the 12-year-old who provided the voice of Fievel the mouse in the film. The album was written, produced and arranged by veteran hit-maker Nat Kipner, whose other albums include The Smurfs and The Chipmunks. With witty songs such as "If Cheese Grew On Trees" and "Fievel's Point of View," this release, from America's youngest mouse hero, will surely be a favorite.

This James Horner score goes along with the landscape in the movie — lush, sweeping, and absolutely breathtaking. Of course, it has its share of bad-guy themes too. As a whole, you could hardly ask for a more beautiful score.

"The Land Before Time" would hardly have come across as eloquently and mystical had it not been for James Horner's spectacular orchestral score which in another time would have made many classical greats take notice. So full of beauty is it, so commanding of our attention, that it works without the visual footage in the same way the classic music behind Fantasia does. Horner, The London Sympony Orchestra and The King's College Choir of England bring an all-encompassing sense of wonder. We feel the leaves blowing in the wind as angelic voices glide over hymns, the earth below us tremble with the steps of a giant carniverous "Sharptooth" and sheets of earth break apart with the pounding of a great divide. You may not be one to memorize wordless music, but if you listen to it and hear it somewhere else later, you will likely remember exactly where it came from. There is one lyrical song, written by Horner and Will Jennings. It is a soaring, splendid ballad, "If We Hold On Together," which is somewhat Biblical in its message, "Valley mountain, there is a fountain that washes our tears all away." The film, helped greatly by the music, seems almost like a face-to-face meeting between Creation and Evolution, though both sides will agree on one thing: it is amazing.

When James Horner accepted scoring duties for James Cameron's sci-fi epic Aliens, the composer was an inexperienced action specialist best known for two unremarkable Star Trek sequel scores that owed much and added little to Jerry Goldsmith's famous theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Aliens, too, was a sequel to a Goldsmith scored blockbuster. But this time Horner's efforts stood firmly on their own, borrowing little more than general mood from Goldsmith's Alien score. The dense ambient orchestrations and inventive electronic percussion used in Aliens were so well received in the film music community that many of the film's cues have become action flick clichés. Aliens also brought Horner his first Academy scoring nomination despite the fact that dissonant sci-fi action compositions by no-name newcomers are not often recognized. (Horner may have benefited from weak competition; ironically, Leonard Rosenmann was also nominated that year for boldly going where Horner had gone twice before: another Star Trek sequel.) Though highly effective in the context of the film, the Aliens score is far from Horner's most listenable. There are some compelling melodies particularly in the opening and closing credits, but the bulk of the CD is dominated by jarring strings and driving percussion that don't work very well as background music. Film music buffs and Aliens diehards may enjoy Varese Sarabonde's 2001 "Deluxe Edition," which contains 16 previously unreleased cues. But casual listeners will probably be more than satisfied with the original version.
