國際微生物學會聯合會（International Union of Microbiological Societies，IUMS）病毒學組設立的國際病毒分類委員會（The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses，ICTV）制定了《國際病毒分類與命名原則》（The International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature）
構成
一般的，ICTV包括6個小組委員會，涵蓋了真菌類（和藻類）病毒(fungal and algae viruses）、植物病毒（plant viruses）、無脊椎動物病毒（invertebrate viruses）、原核生物病毒，包括古細菌（prokaryotic (including archae) viruses）、脊椎動物病毒（vertebrate viruses），這6個小組委員會負責管理ICTV的數據以及對其資料庫和網站的維護工作。ICTV設立了76個國際研究組織(SGs)，覆蓋了所有主要病毒科和屬。每個研究組織的主席由相關的小組委員會主席任命。主席們的主要職責為（1）組織自己領域內SG成員間關於新興分類問題的討論（2）對新的分類學建議書進行監督（3）對ICTV報告中相關的章節進行準備和修訂。
