創作背景
Go West發行於1979年，但是該歌曲最初並沒有像樂隊的其它作品如Y.M.C.A.和In the Navy流行。
歌曲的名字是源自於霍勒斯·格里利的語錄“Go West, young man”（去西部吧，年輕人）之中，是一個美國西部殖民統治的口號。同時，Go West同時也被理解為二十世紀70年代時期，去往舊金山被認為是同性戀解放運動的理想之地。
1978年，亨利·史密斯的基督教歌曲《獻上感恩的心》（Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart）與該歌曲的的曲調有顯著性的相似。
歌曲在7寸唱片和12寸唱片版本都收錄在村民樂團之後的各種精選集，包括1993年寵物店男孩版本之後的1997年電台再次混音版本。
歷史
在1992年，德里克·加曼讓寵物店男孩在曼徹斯特為愛滋病慈善晚會演出，樂團的克里斯·洛選擇了Go West作為他們的演唱曲目。儘管樂隊歌手尼爾·坦南特記不住了當時演唱的歌詞，不過之後，二人還是決定把Go West錄製成單曲。在1993年，Go West作為單曲發行，並收錄在他們的新專輯《Very》之中。在2001年寵物店男孩的音樂劇Closer to Heaven曾使用過該歌曲。
改編
從音樂上，歌曲使用了原始的D大調卡農作為基調，並貫穿歌曲的起始至高潮。另外歌曲的新版本也加入了政治元素，加入了蘇聯歌曲的內容。另外坦南特和洛也加入新的歌詞如下：

除了歌曲中表現的不存在的烏托邦的理想的確，同時寵物店男孩也表達了另一層意思，就是去激勵那些愛滋病感染者不要再感到無助和悲傷。
除此之外，歌曲的MV加入更多的蘇聯形象，如紅星，紅場，列寧等，展示了一群部隊正步走上雲霄，在雲霄上聳有自由女神的形象，意味著西方就是這個烏托邦的國家。加入眾多的共產主義意象，也體現了歌曲的更深一層含義，西方——資本主義才是人們的嚮往，應該走的道路。[3]該歌曲的MV獲得當年格萊美最佳音樂視頻短片獎的提名。

在德國世界盃每場結束時都會播放一首新的球迷音樂，這就是Pet shop boys的《GO WEST》。成立於1981年的“寵物店男孩”(Pet Shop Boys)可算得上是八十年代最後一支也是最成功的電子音樂組合。
寵物店男孩並不是一支偶像派的樂隊，而是完全的實力派。
這首歌很好聽，但是若干年間在大陸是禁播的。因為當時的政治原因和MTV的內容似乎對社會主義國家有所指，所以在當時的社會主義國家都是禁播的。後來隨著世界政局的變化。這首歌慢慢演變成了非常有名的足球歌曲。同時也是德國同志電影《夏日風暴》中的插曲。
