本書是北京理工大學承擔編寫的北京市高校重點立項教材《大學本科生高年級專業英語系列教程》（機電工程類）分冊，另兩冊為（電子信息類和化學化工類）。 該系列教材的機電工程分冊是為機械製造，機電工程和工程力學等類專業本科生在學過錯大學英語四級後，進一步鞏固和提高英語水平，特別是提高閱讀綜合科技書刊及本專業英文資料的能力而編寫的，既可作這些專業學生專業英語閱讀課的教材，也可供其他專業的讀者進行閱讀提高使用。 本書共分為15個單元，含45篇課文。總閱讀量約為100，000詞左右，課文後面編有系統的練習可供課堂教學使用。本書設有6個寫作教學專題，以期對本書的使用者在科技論文寫作方面給予一定指導。
