Zhaotongyun is a world-famous encyclopaedic artist.His courtesy names are Baiyun(literally meaning is ‘the white and pure cloud’ in Chinese) and Xilong (literally meaning is ‘the valuable and rare dragon’ in Chinese), and his assumed names are Banbao, host of Wuyantang, host of Gujingzhai and Jinggong.Zhao is a citizen of Han nationality. He was born in Xiantao, Hubei, China. Zhao graduated from Xiantao Normal Institute in 1972 and became a senior teacher in middle school. He completed the course which called the first national studying and revising the theory of calligraphy in Chinese Language Department in Wuhan University in 1991. Zhao is being widely interest in art from his childhood. Zhao has a deep love for traditional Chinese poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals. He is good at anthenticating and collecting ancient objects.Zhao initially practiced Ouyangxun’s calligraphy.(Ouyangxun was one of the most famous calligraphers in ancient China.)Later he was guided by Wuzhangshu in art.(Wuzhangshu is a well-known poet and scholar in contemporary China.) Zhao attaches importance to read inscription on stone tablet and review model for calligraphy and he spends all his life to copy and recreate them with heart and soul. His tutor,Xialu,taught Zhao philology by himself.(Xialu is a celebrated professor of philology of Chinese Language Department in Wuhan University.)The objects of Zhao’s paintings are flowers and birds, hills and water.Zhao is adept in producing creations in small size. Zhao’s works are mainly extremely abstract and are exquisite in effective of transformation and are filled with epigraphy, nature, intelligence. The scale of Zhao’s works is limited while the implication they convey is profound and thought-provoking. In a certain production, Zhao apply poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals perfectly and make them match wonderful each other. Zhao studied and absorbed the achievements of seals from important early dynasty, Han and Tang dynasty to Ming and Manchu dynasty. Zhao became the only in-house pupil of Yangbaitao in 1982 and then specialized in ancient imperial jade seals, portrait-painting seals, mud seals, pieces of tile, ancient currency and official seals. Zhao strives for expressing extraordinary significance in his works, which appear ordinary. Zhao reserves personal aura and abandons outward appearance. The methods of rushing, cunning, revolving are utilized together by Zhao in his seals engraving. What he writes, what he engraves, are primarily poems and antithetical couplets, which he originate. In 1985 Zhao’s artistic three-dimensional clamshell statue Yellow Cranes Return was created and he won national Baihua Prize and the second Prize of remarkable creations. In 1987 Zhao won national bronze Yellow Cranes Prize in seals engraving and those creations were selected in the first national exhibition of seals engraving of Xilin Seals Press and in the third national exhibition of calligraphy and seals. In 1988 Zhao compiled and wrote five volumes deluxe edition of the Collection of Yangbaitao’s Seals and won the first Prize for design in six provinces of South China. Zhao’s works are exhibited and rewarded at home and abroad. Zhao and his creations are recorded into <<the Dictionary of Ancient and Contempoary Calligraphers in China>>, <<the Dictionary of Seals-cutters>>, <<the Art Achievements of Contempoary Calligraphers in China>>, <<the Dictionary of Global Celebrities in Calligraphy and Painting>>, <<the Dictionary of Contempoary Calligraphers, Painters, and Seals-cutters>>. Zhao’s creations are collected by a lot of museums concerned at home and abroad. Zhao was guided by Professor Chengfangji in theory of calligraphy and he has published plenty of essays on Reports of Calligraphy and the Collection of Essays about Calligraphy in Hubei. Now Zhao is a member of China Calligraphers’ Association, director of Donghu Seals-cutters’ Association, director of Jinghan Poets’ Association, a senior consultant of Shenzhen Seal-cutting Association, a senior consultant of Xiantao Calligraphers’ Association, vice president of Xiantao Artists’ Association, a famous collector and appreciator.
