Johan Huizinga is a modern Dutch historian with a world-famous reputation, and also one of the founders of modern culture history. For the attentions of scholars both at home and abroad about Huizinga is mainly concentrated on the aspects of theory of historiography and history of historiography, but discussions on his concrete ideas of different ages and his concept of whole civilization history are comparatively insufficient. The author attempts to discuss a picture of transitions in the whole civilization history mainly from the angle of civilization history rather than history of historiography.
There are nine parts in this dissertation including the introduction, six chapters, the conclusion and the appendix.
In the introduction, the author elaborates the significance of the selected topic, displayed the external and internal research situations and writing ideas of the dissertation.
In the first chapter, the author elaborates the boring background of Huizinga''s concept of civilization history, including two aspects as historic backgrounds and Huizinga''s life and experience.
In the second chapter, the author mainly discusses Huizinga''s concept of late medieval civilization. The author first selects knighthood as an entry point, then elaborates the late medieval civilization in Huizinga''s visions from two aspects of religions and thoughts, literature and art respectively in order to illustrate Huizinga''s perspective which treats the symbol system of religion-life image integration as the main feature of far gone medieval civilization.
In the third chapter, the author mainly discussed Huizinga''s concept of the Renaissance. The author elaborates the variation history of the concept of Renaissance in Huizinga''s eyes and makes a comparative study on Huizinga''s medieval spirit standard said and Burckhardt''s Renaissance prior ideas. Then the author illustrates the idea that Huizinga is a historian who attaches equal importance to synchronicity and diachronism in the basic view of philosophy of history.
In the fourth chapter, the author mainly discusses Huizinga''s concept of modern civilization. The author first elaborates Huizinga''s view about his motherland, the Dutch civilization. Huizinga considers Dutch civilization as a sort of civilization with communication and intermediary characters, and clarifies Huizinga''s standpoint as a multi-cultural thinker. Afterwards the author discusses Huizinga''s concept of American civilization, especially on the theory of mechanization which is Huizinga''s key theory of American civilization, and then prompts Huizinga''s holistic thinking about modern civilization.
In the fifth chapter, the author mainly discusses Huizinga''s cultural introspections about the whole modern civilization. The author elaborates Huizinga''s basic position of rationalism. Due to the lack of real rational spirits, the pair of seemingly contradictory ideas as scientific thinking and anti-intellectualism co-exists in the spiritual structure of modern men.
In the sixth chapter, the author mainly discusses Huizinga''s theoretical thinking in summary, the doctrine of play. The author explains Huizinga''s concepts about play and elaborates that the doctrine of play has been structured into a sort of independent ontology with complete senses. The author further discusses Huizinga''s concept that civilization is just a game and his attempt of philosophy of history which penetrates the whole development of civilization, including Roman civilization, medieval civilization and modern civilization.
In the conclusion, the author reviews and summarizes the characteristics of Huizinga''s concept of civilization history, and points out Huizinga''s status in the pedigree of modern western thinkers.
Key words: Huizinga, concept of civilization history, cultural vitality, comprehensive humanistic thinker
