本書在觀察和分析大量語料的基礎上，採用語言接觸理論的新視角和分析方法，分析英漢語言接觸中由表層到深層的影響與嬗變。本書拓展了現代漢語中英語外來詞的研究範圍，內容還將涉及英語對漢語辭彙語義、詞法和句法三個層面的影響。本書在理論上試圖用現代中西方語言學語言發展變化的新學說，即辭彙化和語法化的理論精華來解釋英語影響漢語變化的內部語言機制和動因。語言接觸作為一種“催化劑”，誘發並加快了漢語自身的演化過程；也就是說，語言就是在這種“共振關係”下發展變化的。此外，書中還指出，翻譯是在英漢語言接觸中造成語言變化的一個重要途徑。
