本教材是在多年通識教育選修課教學實踐的基礎上，擷取了西方文化中影響較大、較為常識性的內容加以介紹，並通過對英文經典影片中以“希臘文化”“基督文化”“英國文化”“美國文化”為題材的電影進行賞析，從而向學生展開一部西方文化畫卷，為學生的英語學習提供相關文化背景知識，最終在對比中西文化差異的基礎上進一步提高學生的文化意識和素養。
